Ultimately, fans of Axiom Verge will have to wait until the first half of 2021 to get their hands on the sequel. There are a number of games coming out for the Nintendo Switch in 2020, but Axiom Verge 2 will no longer be one of them.

There are two core reasons why Axiom Verge 2 is being pushed back until 2021. Firstly, is how complicated the game is compared to the original. Thomas Happ, the developer of Axiom Verge 2, said in a blog post that compared to the original, the sequel is much more complicated to develop.
This includes enemies for Axiom Verge 2. In the original Axiom Verge, enemies move on a set path while in the sequel, enemies use a detection system. Once an enemy finds a player in the sequel, they will chase them, which is far more complicated to develop rather compared to giving enemies a set path to follow. The environment is also much more detailed than the original, as it was designed to be blockier while the sequel will have a more vibrant and detailed world to explore.
On top of development complications, the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic is also partly to blame for the delay. Axiom Verge 2 was announced in December of 2019, before the world really knew about COVID-19. The pandemic has been affecting Thomas Happ personally, as his young son, who is in preschool, has been frustrated with being unable to have in-person contact with his friends.
Despite the delay, things still look good for Axiom Verge 2. The developer has commented in the past that the Legend of Zelda series will a big inspiration for his game, and with how popular the original Axiom Verge was, the future seems bright for the sequel.
Axiom Verge 2 will be available for the Nintendo Switch in early 2021.
