After all, if there’s one thing the past 14 years of MCU movies have made sure to establish is Marvel Studios’ preferred aesthetic for its characters, as well as an overall color palette whose strict consistency has sometimes been criticized. Regardless of that, oftentimes it’s Marvel’s own fans who add a spin to their beloved superheroes, and while these types of work can always be surprising, there’s nothing like Digiguru’s Avengers.

The Russo brothers themselves shared some of the images made by UK-based developer Adam Hall (@digiguru), who’s not an artist in the traditional sense since his profile states that he makes his ideas come to life with the help of AI tools such as the popular Midjourney software (Vid. Street Fighter). Hall specified for his version of the Avengers to look like it was made by Anderson in 1980. Characters such as Captain America, Black Panther, Thanos, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and a particularly disturbing Rocket Raccoon all shine in these muted backgrounds.

The Russos first noticed Digiguru’s work over Twitter, but such a high profile naturally led to Hall getting several new followers on his Instagram account. There, he posted a follow-up of his current hobby, adding characters like Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, and Star-Lord. Hall also had the chance to talk with the Russos, saying his one request was that they could help Anderson get a Marvel gig in the future.

Anderson’s career kicked off with 1998’s Rushmore, followed by the widely successful The Royal Tenenbaums and animated gems Fantastic Mr. Fox and Isle of Dogs. His distinct filming techniques and his love for colorful worlds, such as The Grand Budapest Hotel, are probably why people like Hall have become such fans of him, and it’s safe to say his vintage Avengers capture the right vibe with just a dash of Loki’s TVA.

As Marvel Studios’ Phase Five and Six introduce MCU audiences to the Multiverse, there is potential for a different kind of Avengers to show up, and at least the Russos are on board for the Avengers in the ’80s.

The Avengers films are now available on Disney Plus.
