It was already known that Cameron is working on four sequels to Avatar, which was first released in 2009, and Producer Jon Landau has confirmed that each project will focus on the Sully family. “Each story will be a standalone and each will come to its own conclusion,” he said at CinemaCon. The purpose, however, is to create a “larger epic saga.” Only time will tell if the Avatar films will be able to live up to fan expectations.

Even though the official trailer was for exhibition attendees’ eyes online, fans will be able to watch it pretty soon. It was confirmed during CinemaCon that the Avatar: The Way of Water trailer will play exclusively in theaters with Marvel Studio’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which premieres on May 6. The trailer will also be posted online a week after for the world to see. Some details from the trailer have emerged, and Deadline reports that it focuses on Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully living with his family on the planet of Pandora. After “a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started,” Sully must unite forces with the Na’vi race to ensure Pandora’s safety.
Apart from Avatar: The Way of Water, the Disney panel at CinemaCon also highlighted Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Black Panther is recognized as one of the best origin stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, after lead actor Chadwick Boseman’s tragic death, the team struggled to bring the sequel to fruition without him. It is still unknown what direction the story will go in, but it seems to be sticking with the world of Wakanda and its people, and how they move on without their King T’Challa.
As part of the event, Disney showcased a sizzle reel that featured the first official footage from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Fandango’s Erik Davis tweeted some details of the footage and specifically mentioned a scene featuring Letitia Wright’s Shuri, Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia, and Danai Gurira’s Okoye on the front lines of a battle. With T’Challa gone, it seems like the female characters will be taking charge and leading their people to victory. While the Black Panther sequel is expected to release on November 11, 2022, there is no confirmation on whether a trailer will be arriving any time soon.
Avatar is scheduled to premiere in theaters on December 16, 2022, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever premieres on November 11, 2022.
