On Instagram, Landau shared a post of himself and James Cameron wearing face masks and personal protective equipment upon arrival in New Zealand. The producer confirmed that he and the Avatar 2 director had officially made it to New Zealand and that they would now be beginning their “14-day government supervised self-isolation.”

Avatar 2 has been in development for a long time, and was once pegged for a 2014 release. This didn’t happen though, as Cameron and the team had to develop new technology that would allow them to do performance capture underwater, delaying Avatar 2 to 2021. Several other movies and TV shows have been delayed because of COVID-19 and it’s unclear if this change to production could also affect Avatar 2.

The response to the Instagram post reveals that not all Kiwis are happy about the Avatar 2 production team being allowed to enter the country to start filming again. There are other New Zealanders stuck outside of the country and many would like to see them granted the same, special permissions as Cameron and Landau.

However, it seems that the money that could potentially be spent on making Avatar 2 in the country was too good for New Zealand’s politicians to pass up. The Avatar sequels reportedly cost $1 billion to make and if a lot of that money will be spent on New Zealand, that will be why the production team has been allowed to come back.
